Overview
Sprout is an innovative app, designed to counter some of the challenges posed by distance in relationships. Unlike conventional dating apps, Sprout introduces a novel concept where users match with and exchange plants as symbolic representations of their partner's emotions.
Sprout serves as a platform to break the ice by establishing a common ground from which users may express their feelings comfortably.
The Context
In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, the world had to embrace remote communication as the new “normal” in order to maintain relationships.
At the same time, it makes gauging emotions and commitment in a relationship when not physically together more challenging.
When it comes to human interactions, there's only so much technology can do to help . . .
Anna isn't the only one. After interviewing 5 other couples, 100% said lack of communication was a major pain point.
Things to Consider
When communication fails, a relationship will likely follow suit. Distance just places another layer of emphasis on communication:
Commitment and feelings more difficult to convey, remotely.
It's easier to dismiss or avoid important, vulnerable conversations.
It's hard to prioritize and coordinate time for a relationship when leading separate(d) lives.
Many in-person interactions cannot be replicated, digitally.
Proposal
Introduce a tool that alleviates the anxiety of taking the first step
The Dilemma
Effective communication is vital when maintaining a healthy relationship, especially when it is long distanced. While technology makes it easier to keep in touch, we first have to initiate communication.
Easier said than done.
The Idea
Plant the seeds for meaningful communication with a push of a button
and avoid bitterness later on

Commentary From Testing
How is the calendar different from other calendar apps?
Comments:
It's a hassle to juggle another calendar, especially since there's no standardized scheduling system
Calendar-use varies from person to person (some don’t use it at all, and some time block everything)
Solution:
Disable auto-sync, and encourage users to manually mark availability to coordinate plans
Are there limitations? What’s stopping me from trolling?
Comments:
If there's no limit to how much users can upload pictures and write diary entries, it's easy to spam
While trolling is “half the fun”, meaningful moments should be easy to revisit
Solution:
Prompt photos and diary entries with daily tasks, instead of giving total freedom
Will there be a feature that lets me know if my partner is mad at me?
Comments:
Conflict aversion often leads to miscommunication or misunderstandings
It’s easier to jump to conclusions than to initiate a potentially difficult conversation
Solution:
Give users a way to notify/nudge partner, prompting them to discuss in further detail
